Description
The "towers" itinerary offers a fascinating journey through eight ancient buildings known as "towers", intended for the "game of pigeons" or "pulieri". These towers, distributed on the passes on the eastern side of the Metellina valley, represent a unique historical and architectural heritage, offering the visitor the opportunity to immerse themselves in a fascinating history and in a suggestive landscape setting.
The route starts from the Church of the Annunziata, one of the oldest "farmhouses" of Cava de' Tirreni, located on the south-eastern side of Mount Castello. The parish church dedicated to the Virgin Annunziata dates back to 1506, when it replaced the older church of S. Maria a Toro as the parish seat, for greater convenience of the inhabitants.
Crossing the ancient farmhouse, the route passes points of great historical and panoramic interest, including the Chapel of "Casa 'e rose" and the Serra area, where nets were once set for hunting pigeons. We continue reaching the ancient church of S. Maria a Toro, dating back to around 1000, and then head towards the passes of Borrello, Campitello and Arco, places famous for the traditional hunting of passenger pigeons.
The "game of pigeons" has Lombard roots and has continued to be an attraction in the area, attracting enthusiasts and the curious over the centuries. The towers along the route are tangible evidence of this traditional practice and arouse the interest of tourists, including the writer Walter Scott.
The Arco pass, with its towers, is particularly known for having hosted famous country festivals in the 19th century, which attracted holidaymakers and tourists. The rhythm of the seasons, the scenic beauty and the enveloping history make the "towers" itinerary an unforgettable journey through the past and present of Cava de' Tirreni.
