The Cathedral of Santa Maria della Visitazione, the main place of worship in Cava de' Tirreni, is also the co-cathedral of the archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni. In 1513, a bull from Pope Leo centuries, the building has undergone various transformations, taking on its current appearance in the 19th century with the rebuilding of the staircase and the decoration of the façade with stucco.

Description

The façade of the Cathedral, rebuilt in 1823, originally featured two orders of pillars with Corinthian capitals in Patierno stone, a trace of which today remains on the right side of the building. Inside, the sixteenth-century marble baptistery and the choir stand out, while among the side chapels the one dedicated to San Adiutore, patron saint of the city, stands out.

The notable canvas of the "Pietà" is the work of the knight Armenante, an 18th century painter from Cave, while the frescoes on the vault date back to 1797, created by Mozzillo.

The construction of the Cathedral began in 1517, entrusted to the architect Pignoloso Cafaro, but its complete realization required a long time and repeated consolidation interventions. In 1587, the wooden ceiling of the central nave was created, decorated with canvases painted by talented artists. Unfortunately, during the Second World War in 1943, the canvases and the ceiling were destroyed by cannon fire. Further restorations became necessary following the 1980 earthquake.

On 30 September 1986, by virtue of the Instantibus Votis decree of the Congregation for Bishops, the seat of Cava de' Tirreni was united in full union with the seat of Amalfi and the new district took on its current name. At the same time, the cathedral of Cava assumed the title of co-cathedral.

The complex history and richly detailed architecture make the Cathedral a place of great artistic and historical interest.
