Church of S. Croce
- Edifici Religiosi
- Via Enrico De Marinis 4, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The parish complex of Santa Croce stands on a small hill along the road from Cava de' Tirreni to Salerno. It is the hub of the Croce hamlet, one of the most peripheral areas of Cava de' Tirreni, characterized by forest areas and paths. The church, of ancient origins, could belong to a Basilian monastery. A document from 1255 mentions the monastery of the SS. Trinità di Cava who gave a forest to Matteo Calvaruso in the Croce district, and the church may have been part of an Armenian convent.
Description
The church, with a slightly classical façade, stands on a particular panoramic churchyard, offering a superior view compared to the street below. Its longitudinal structure, with a single nave with side altars, includes a rectangular transept and a small apse. The interior, decorated in Baroque style with a palette of ivory and straw white, features an entablature along the side walls, on which rises a lunette barrel vault adorned with decorative details that extend to the intrados of the dome.
The architectural complex includes the sacristy, the rectory and other parish rooms, connecting to adjacent buildings. The façade, which intersects at a right angle with a residential complex, shows classical elements with baroque hints. Consisting of a single level, it is delimited by pilasters and adorned with a decorative stucco band.
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the assets of the hermitage of Santa Croce passed to the royal state property, following the suppression of the religious orders carried out by the French (1806-1815). However, the church was provided with an income and left open for worship under the care of a priest. In 1904, the annexed rooms were used as a public school and then as a residence. In 1882 the terracotta floor of the church and other works were made, on the initiative of Francesco Avagliano.
In 1984, extraordinary maintenance works included the laying of a new marble floor and the painting of the entire church. From the same year, the management of the church and the parish was entrusted to the Capuchin Friars of Cava.
