- Chiesa di Santa Lucia, Via Antonio Adinolfi, Santa Lucia, Santa Rosa, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84015, Italia
The church of Santa Lucia, the heart of the homonymous hamlet of Cava de' Tirreni, stands centrally in an evolving urban context. Surrounded by rural plains, the area shows signs of intense residential and industrial growth. The church dominates the main square with its mannerist façade in carved gray tuff, flanked by a salient body on the left and a related building on the right, culminating in the bell tower at the opposite end. An architectural landmark in the changing fabric of this vibrant community.
Description
The monumental complex of "Santa Lucia de Balnearia" is configured as an ancient testimony of faith rooted in the history of Cava de' Tirreni. Founded in 925 by Raidolfo di Domnello, the church was originally exempt from diocesan jurisdiction, as confirmed by the bishop of Salerno in 1040. In 1092, management passed to the monastery of San Nicola di Gallocanta and, in 1144, to the Badia della Santissima Trinità of Quarry, which maintained it until the 14th century.
While the original church was lost, 1984 saw the construction of a bell tower away from the church, flanked by a new pastoral centre.
The latter, completed by a hall, catechesis rooms and weekday chapel, represents a hub for the community.
The interior of the church shows a mix of architectural styles, with a Renaissance base surmounted by a Baroque decoration. The longitudinal plan, the three naves, the transept and the central apse outline a liturgical space of notable artistic importance.
The flat false ceiling, the gilded wood coffered ceiling and the Lucian-themed paintings enrich the central nave. The choir loft, on the counter-façade, with a carved and gilded wooden balustrade, adds a touch of elegance. The side naves, asymmetrical and integrated with pre-existing spaces, offer further decorative details. In 1984, the bell tower was erected in a position distant from the church, constituting a singular architectural element in the panorama of the complex.
This complex is a testament to continuity in local religious practice, uniting past and present through its intricate history and architecture that has evolved over the centuries.
