Church of Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori
- Edifici Religiosi
- Rione Filangieri, Passetto, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
Nestled on the Valley of the Dragone torrent with a wide view of the sea of Amalfi, the small Church of Sant'Alfonso Maria de' Liguori was the secret place where the saint used to gather in prayer and meditation, receiving numerous apparitions of the Madonna. It was here that the Saint composer drew inspiration for the quintessential Christmas carol later adapted into "Tu scendi dalle stelle". The birth of the complex took place in the eighteenth century when a convent of Redemptorist Fathers was established. Abandoned in 1980 due to the earthquake, it is now being restored.
Description
The origins of the Church follow the events of the Adinolfi family, originally from Cava de' Tirreni and then moved to Avellino in the mid-18th century. The Adinolfi subsequently established a monastery which they entrusted to the Redemptorist Fathers.
In 1842 the church was renovated to accommodate an ever-increasing number of faithful and so a new building was created which incorporated the old chapel. The works ended in 1909.
Today the church has an entrance consisting of a Romanesque-inspired colonnade built in 1909 by the engineer Domenico Mazzei, responsible for the previous renovation works. Inside we find a single nave which incorporates the pre-existing chapels on both sides. The side chapels have various niches that contained wooden statues of the saints, illuminated by windows placed in front of them. The flooring was removed after the Irpinia earthquake in 1980 and today only has a structural screed as a walking surface. The ceiling is made up of round arches decorated with stucco. Of notable interest are the stained glass windows (with figures evocative of feats or legends) which reproduce religious subjects, typical of Gothic architecture. The altar is in Gothic style with round arches and three stained windows that illuminate the structure.
The church remained abandoned until 2022, but fortunately today it is undergoing restoration.
