Church of Saints Marco Evangelista and Giuseppe ai Marini
- Edifici Religiosi
- Via Pietro Ciccullo, Marini, Alessia, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The architectural complex of San Marco stands in the heart of the ancient Marini village in Cava de' Tirreni, standing out as its main attraction. Inserted in the dense urban fabric, the context is typically rural, with a hilly area and a compact village of houses and narrow streets characterized by a steep slope. Comprising the main church, the chapels of the Crucifix and San Marco, the confraternal oratory, the sacristy and other modest rooms, the San Marco complex presents itself as a fascinating testimony to local history.
Description
The church of San Marco, although the precise date of its foundation is uncertain, dates back to at least 1300 and is also mentioned in the second half of the sixteenth century. Initially, in the Marini district, the inhabitants built a chapel dedicated to San Marco because it was far from the parish church of Dupino. This chapel, today corresponding to the internal chapel dedicated to the Madonna of Constantinople or to San Marco, was administered by procurators chosen from the local patrician families. In 1574, the artist from Noce Nicola Vitale enriched the chapel with works of art and paintings.
In 2008, the church was restored and the dividing wall between the chapel of the Madonna of Constantinople (or of San Marco) and the nave was removed, allowing direct communication between the two environments.
The sacred building, preceded by a terraced churchyard, has a sober eighteenth-century façade. The plan is longitudinal with a single nave, with a slightly emerging transept, rectangular apse, central dome and barrel vault roofs.
The church develops along the main street of the village, and its baroque architecture is evident in the decoration of the internal chapels. Pilasters with composite capitals punctuate the nave, while an entablature adorned with sculptural stucco runs along the side walls. Frescoes and paintings decorate the barrel vault with lunettes, while the transept has four corner pylons and an elegant dome on spandrels.
The church of San Marco, with its rich history and well-preserved baroque architecture, represents an important cultural and artistic heritage in the context of Cava de' Tirreni.
