The parish complex of San Giuseppe al Pozzo, located along the arterial road between Nocera and Salerno in Cava de' Tirreni, is located in an expanding suburban area, characterized by recent buildings of large dimensions but of modest quality. The church, in the past a point of reference in the rural context, now integrates dimensionally with the surrounding buildings. Its eclectic facade of neo-Romanesque inspiration, flanked by the bell tower, constitutes a central element in an urbanistically shapeless area, separated from the road axis by a modest churchyard.
Description
The church of San Giuseppe al Pozzo, whose date of foundation is not certain, but is already present on maps in the mid-eighteenth century, fits into the context of the growing population of the district, distant from the parish church of Santa Lucia. Its construction, probably motivated by the need to serve the local community, was subject to expansions in 1772 and at the end of the nineteenth century, on the initiative of the priest Don Domenico D'Amico. The latter promoted not only the expansion of the church but also the construction of adjacent rooms and the rectory.
The planimetric typology of the church follows a longitudinal scheme with a single hall with a terminal apse. The rectangular nave is divided by a transverse median arch, the walls are divided into two levels with pilasters and semicircular windows, giving the interior a bright and airy appearance. The central entrance and the apse, introduced by a sort of triumphal arch, are distinctive architectural elements.
In addition to the church, the parish complex includes the bell tower, the oratory, the rectory, pastoral rooms and external areas. The façade restored in the 19th century retains its current appearance and integrates with the surrounding structure. Don D'Amico's initiative contributed not only to the physical expansion but also to transforming the church into a real community centre, playing a significant role in the life of the local population.
