Church of San Nicola di Bari in Dupino
- Edifici Religiosi
- Dupino, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The church of San Nicola di Bari is part of an architectural complex of notable artistic and environmental importance, including the former monastery of the Capuchin Poor Clares (on its left side), various adjacent rooms and, not far away, the Oratory of the Nativity of Mary Santissima (previously dedicated to San Antonio of Padua). The square in front of the church facade connects the buildings of the complex, opening towards the valley and the hills which thus characterize the urban morphology of Cava de' Tirreni.
Description
The history of the church of San Nicola in Dupino is lost in the mists of time, with the first mention dated 795, suggesting the existence of a Byzantine rite cult building. Scholars hypothesize an ancient foundation, then subject to various renovations over the centuries. In 1960, the parish priest Don Emilio Papa undertook extensive restoration work, but the church is currently in a state of structural degradation, requiring urgent conservation interventions.
The interior of the church, characterized by a sumptuous late Baroque appearance, has a longitudinal planimetric typology, in the shape of a Latin cross, with a single nave, non-emerging transept and rectangular apse. The counter-façade, composed of a lowered arch, defines a passage vestibule, supporting the choir loft above with its wooden balustrade. Along the walls of the nave there are chapels with round vaults, embellished with richly decorated Doric pilaster strips, entablature and barrel vault with lunettes.
Masonry altars adorn the side chapels, while marble altars and stucco frames embellish the transept. The main altar, placed in a scenographic way, dominates the transept, creating a suggestive visual effect. The façade, in neoclassical style, appears modest and sober, delicately fitting into the historical context. While retaining its functionality, the church of San Nicola a
Dupino requires timely intervention to preserve its historical and artistic value.
