  • Via Raffaele Baldi, Pianesi, Li Curti, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia

The church of San Gabriele Arcangelo is located in the Pianesi hamlet of Cava de' Tirreni, which represents an ancient medieval village, preserving its rural origins. Not far from the village square, the church is located in an isolated position, surrounded by green spaces and immersed in a stratified urban fabric. It does not have a churchyard, it stands along a narrow street in the district centre, maintaining a suggestive atmosphere and a link with the history of the place.

Description

The church of San Gabriele Arcangelo, whose foundation date precedes 1497, is mentioned in the registers of the Benedictine abbot Arsenio di Terracina. In 1919, the bishop Msgr. L. Lavitrano promoted it to a parish headquarters during a diocesan reorganization.

Between 1930 and 1960, the church underwent extensive restorations both inside and out. During the years 2002-2009, maintenance and restoration interventions mainly affected the interiors, including the restoration of decoration and painting. To accommodate the parish's growing population, a mezzanine was added in the entrance area.

The façade, of classical inspiration, overlooks nearby buildings. Internally, the church has a longitudinal plan with a single nave with a deep apse intended for the presbytery. The roof is barrel-shaped with lunettes in the first part and sail-shaped in the second. Pilasters with composite capitals, elaborate entablature and floral decorations characterize the internal architectural structure. Bracket niches and full arched recesses open between the pilasters. The barrel vault and the ribbed vault are decorated with rich stuccoes. The church is accompanied by a frescoed chapel used as a sacristy, located in the right apse.
