Sanctuary of S. Maria del Rovo
- Edifici Religiosi
- Via Santa Maria del Rovo, Santa Maria del Rovo, Acqua della Quercia, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The rural area, north-west of Cava de' Tirreni, hosted the Marian cult in the 19th century, linked to the hamlet of Passiano. The peasant Teresa Senatore, motivated by the difficulty of reaching the church of Passiano, gathered the children under a ladder next to a bramble, placing an image of the Madonna called "Madonna del Rosto" or "Madonna del Rovo". The construction of the current church took place between 1870 and 1875. The church, designed by the engineer Michele Accarino, was consecrated in 1883.
Description
The church of Santa Maria del Rovo has a Romanesque gabled façade, characterized by horizontal bands, fake pilasters and decorative hanging arches. The interior has a single nave with two side altars and a triumphal arch, with the apse containing the altar dedicated to Santa Maria del Rovo. In 1886 the sacristy and two upper rooms were added, followed in 1890 by the construction of the bell tower. In 1895, Bishop Giuseppe Izzo blessed the first bells, called "Santa Maria del Rovo" and "Immacolata", while in 1899 work began on the pipe organ, blessed in 1900. After Gelsomina's death, the priest Alfonso Apicella and the faithful continued the spread of the Marian cult and completed the work on the church.
The Madonna del Rovo, venerated for the graces bestowed, was crowned on 9 June 1909. In 1913, the priest Don Prospero Pisapia enriched the temple with the baptistery, the balustrade and the marble floor, while in 1918 the artist Antonio Ferrigno decorated the apse with frescoes depicting Moses and the burning bush. In 1920, the church was declared an autonomous parish. After the Second World War, in 1945, the vault of the nave was frescoed by Guglielmo Coppola as a sign of gratitude to the Madonna. In 2009, for the centenary of the coronation, the "Incoronata" bell was cast.
The community has always shown profound veneration for Santa Maria del Rovo, manifested in numerous community moments, triduums, septenaries and novenaries. The current parish priest, Don Francesco Della Monica, has continued this tradition with initiatives that have contributed to rebuilding the community.
