Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore
- Edifici Religiosi
- via Raffaele Luciano, Corpo di Cava, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84019, Italia
The collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore, founded by the will of Abbot Pietro della Santissima Trinità di Cava, was built between 1079 and 1092 on the site donated by Gisulfo, prince of Salerno. The place, called "Terra", already hosted a hospice for pilgrims and the poor since the construction of the nearby Badia in the 11th century. Subsequently, a village inhabited by families linked to the Badia developed, giving rise to the medieval village of Corpo di Cava. Initially in Gothic style, the church had three naves with frescoed walls.
Description
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, in the heart of Corpo di Cava, has a rich history and an impressive architectural structure. Inserted in a medieval context, with winding streets and dense construction, it is part of a complex that includes various buildings, including the sacristy, the bell tower, underground rooms, the oratory of the Holy Spirit, the rectory and appurtenant rooms.
The façade, of eclectic taste, dominates an open space in the center of the village. Inside, the Baroque renovation has altered the original Gothic style, but the large and elegant structure retains its majesty. The longitudinal plan, with a Latin cross and three naves, shows an aligned transept and a large central apse. The side naves, with four bays each, have details such as deep side chapels and recesses with Vaccarian windows.
The roofs vary, with the coffered and decorated central nave, ribbed vaults on the sides and an elegant apse basin. Pillars, round arches and ornate pilasters define the internal architecture, enriched by heraldic ecclesiastical frescoes. The transept continues the architectural motif of the central nave, characterized by blind arches, while the apse has composite pilaster strips and ribs in the basin.
Natural light abounds thanks to the numerous windows, creating an evocative atmosphere. The collegiate church, witness to centuries of history, continues to be a place of religious and cultural importance in the context of Corpo di Cava.
