Church of Saint James (Mother Lucia)
- Edifici Religiosi
- Via Vincenzo Palazzo, Castagneto, Casa Davide, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The foundation of the church can be traced back to the 15th century, by the will of the brothers Buzio and Annichio Vespone. With a will of 1431 the aforementioned Buzio bequeathed to the church a walnut field near the locality "Il Pozzillo", however entrusting its administration to congregation of S.Maria della Pietà in S.Arcangelo. The founders also wanted a hospital next to the church (1400) and assigned some shops to it as an endowment, so that their income could provide for the maintenance of the sick. The factory was used as a lecture hall by the ancient University of Cava.
Description
The church, a rectangular hall building with a semi-elliptical apse, has vertical stone masonry structures with ocher plaster. The barrel vault with nails in the nave and the basin in the apse are supported by a gable roof with tiles. The floor is composed of white and gray marble slabs, while the external decorations include pilasters, a scrolled coat of arms and stucco. Internally, you can see white stuccoes and architectural details, with sacred furnishings such as a stone stoup dating back to 1400.
In the post-war period, after the violent clashes around Cava during the Allied landing, the absurdity of the carnage was revealed. Many young lives were sacrificed, and hundreds of soldiers lay buried in makeshift cemeteries or abandoned along the embankments.
Lucia Apicella, a woman from Cava (used to pray in the church of San Giacomo), struck by the tragedy, perceived the absurdity of that war which had torn young people away from their homes. While the war had spared his family, the pain persisted for those "mama's boys" lost among rocks and undergrowth, abandoned at the mercy of the dogs or even ignored by the local children. Her story highlights the human cost of conflict and the difficult reality mothers face when their children's lives are sacrificed far from home.
