Description

The small church of Santa Maria a Toro, dating back to the 10th century, was the ancient parish church of the district of S. Adiutore. Having fallen into abandonment over time, the inhabitants of the area preferred to frequent the new church further down the valley, that of the Annunziata. The mention of Santa Maria "ad torum" dates back to 1169, as reported by the historian Polverino, indicating its position on a hill, as suggested by local toponymy. The church has a valuable carved stone portal from the 1500s and still retains an atmosphere of antiquity. From inside you can access the nearby "puliere", a tower whose construction is documented in the 18th century. Once the seat of the religious congregation dedicated to the Holy Spirit, the church recalls, through a recent canvas, the cenacle and Pentecost. This sacred site offers a window into local history, bearing witness to the transformations of religious practices and community preferences over the centuries.
