Church of Sancta Maria de Virginibus - Pregiatello
- Edifici Religiosi
- Santissima Annunziata, Pregiatello, Santa Rosa, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
In Pregiatello, the picturesque farmhouse offers a splendid panorama of the Mitiliana Valley, the Nocerino countryside and even Vesuvius in the distance. In the heart of this village stands the only church, built in 1592 with the approval of Bishop Cesare de Cordona. Financed by the donations of the inhabitants of the Casale and the generous contribution of Giulio Coronato of Pregiatello, the church obtained the Patronage for the community. The Coda family, originally from Aversa and settled in the Casale in 1500, received the right of Patronage, thus preserving the tradition.
Description
The small church of Pregiato, built in 1592 in the hamlet of Pregiatello, presents itself as an architectural jewel with a simple and suggestive appearance. Characterized by a square plan and massive walls, the church houses an altar and two paintings dating back to the first decades of the 17th century. Among these, the Madonna delle Grazie stands out with Saints Francis of Assisi and Saint Francis of Paola, depicted as intercessors towards the souls in Purgatory.
A roundel in the church represents God the Creator, with particular attention to the souls in purgatory, symbolized by the Madonna in the act of breastfeeding the Baby Jesus, donating milk for the benefit of those in a state of purification. The presence of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Francis of Paola as intermediaries towards the grieving souls further enriches the symbolic meaning of the work.
The painting offers a panoramic view of the northern area of Cava de' Tirreni, with the Church of San Nicola di Pregiato in the foreground. The church, located in the Casale della Fontana, was built thanks to the permission of Bishop Cesare de Cordona in 1592. The respectable Giulio Coronato di Pregiatello contributed financially, establishing the right of patronage for the community.
The Coda family, originally from Aversa and established in the Casale in 1500, maintained the right of patronage, with Don Teodoro, descendant of the family, who in 1619 left funds for the celebration of two weekly masses in the church, creating a lasting bond between the family Coda and the Fountain Chapel.
