Church of San Lorenzo Martire
- Edifici Religiosi
- Via San Lorenzo, San Lorenzo, Maddalena, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The parish complex of San Lorenzo Martire, inspired by the neo-Romanesque but of contemporary conception, occupies the heart of the south-eastern district of Cava de' Tirreni. Inserted between ancient urban structures and a modern consolidated expansion, the context has few free spaces on a varied territory with levels, differences in height and steepness. The new church stands on the site of a previous one, built in 1490 and dedicated to S. Maria delle Grazie and San Lorenzo, thus contributing to a harmonious fusion of history and architectural innovation.
Description
The church of San Lorenzo Martire, inserted as an autonomous block in the surrounding urban fabric, has a salient façade with neo-Romanesque elements in exposed concrete and red tuff, which overlooks a large churchyard. The bell tower and the other facades follow the same style and materials.
The interior, with a free plan with three naves, of which the lateral ones serve as walkways, converge without interruptions in the trapezoidal apse area which houses the presbytery. Inclined V-profile pillars divide the longitudinal space into four bays, with mullioned windows in each bay and an intradosed double-pitched roof. The environment is characterized by the structural members left to the rustic, such as pillars, inclined beams, perimeter curb in exposed concrete, tuff masonry and stone ad opus incertum. Natural lighting comes from the mullioned windows on the upper wall of the central nave.
The complex includes the church, the bell tower, the sacristy, appurtenant rooms, crypt, and a basement hall. The old church, damaged during the bombings of 1943, was demolished, but the marble high altar was preserved. In 1988, the sacred hall was rearranged with new fixed liturgical elements, while in 1990 an extension was built with a large hall in the basement, accessible from the side street of the church.
