Hermitage of San Martino
- Edifici Religiosi
- Via San Martino, San Martino, Acqua della Quercia, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
Defined by the historian Giuseppe Trezza, the "all green pyramid", the San Martino hill delimits Cava towards Nocera: with its height of 377 metres, it preserves the ruins of an ancient monastery dedicated to the Saint, a monasterium in cacumine montis, dating back to 9th century AD The hermitage, with the church and a piece of land, were donated by the Lombard princes to the Abbey of SS. Trinità and is also mentioned in the Codex Diplomaticus Cavensis as a donation to the monk Orso around 1063.
Description
The hermitage of Monte San Liberatore, located near the village of Alessia, constitutes a fascinating journey through the history, nature and spirituality of Cava de' Tirreni. The village of Alessia, still today marked by the flood of 1954, maintains a medieval character with its side-by-side houses and the narrow streets that lead to the small church dedicated to the Archangel Raphael.
The San Liberatore Valley, once the scene of pigeon capture with the ancient "plagariae", offers a suggestive landscape between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Metellina valley. Along the path that leads to the hermitage, panoramic spaces open up that embrace the gulf up to Punta Licosa, with Vietri and the splendid Amalfi Coast in the background. The presence of a rock gym, equipped by the C.A.I. section of Cava de' Tirreni in 1984, also testifies to the sporting aspect of this area.
During the ascent, Giuseppe Trezza highlights a chapel of the Pietà, transformed in 1933 into a small Lourdes cave, with a marble sculpture depicting Jesus Christ. The route towards the hermitage ends with the majestic monumental cross that dominates the sacred area.
Climbing further, you reach the summit where an iron cross from 1955 stands out, designed to be visible from Salerno, Vietri and Cava de' Tirreni. This sacred place not only offers a spectacular panorama, but also represents a journey through popular devotion, local history and the connection with the uncontaminated nature of the area.
On Monday, 11 November 2024, with the civil ceremony of cutting the ribbon for the conclusion of the restoration of the monastery and the religious rite of the "Dedication" of the church, the Hermitage was officially returned to the Cava community, to once again be a popular destination for pilgrims for the care of the spirit and an ideal place for travelers to enjoy the pleasant landscape.
