Church of San Vito Martire
- Edifici Religiosi
- Via Salvo D'Acquisto, Epitaffio, San Vito, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The church of San Vito Nuova, inserted in a vast parish complex, represents contemporary sacred architecture. The foundation of the church dates back to 1971. In previous years the need for a new, larger church than that of San Vito Vecchia was felt. The complex includes various elements such as bell tower, sacristy, parish hall, pastoral rooms, oratory, rectory, religious and school institute, sports facilities, open areas, car parks and gardens. The building integrates into the modern expansion of the city center towards the north-west.
Description
The church of San Vito Nuova is a contemporary architectural work that stands out for its symbolic design based on the shape of the "tent". This concept translates into curvilinear walls, a circular plan, a cylindrical volume and a concave-convex conical roof.
Fitting into a densely populated urban context, the emerging building has a modest entrance, while its circular liturgical hall is oriented longitudinally towards a large presbytery. The notable height of the hall is characterized by curvilinear walls uniformly covered in travertine slabs, interrupted by emerging pillars and exposed beams that converge towards a conical roof.
The plan of the church, circular and inspired by the symbolism of the "tent", presents a sacred hall with an irregular curvilinear shape, liturgically oriented longitudinally. Multiple entrances, including a large atrium and side entrances, contribute to the flexibility and accessibility of the space.
The facade does not follow a traditional scheme but shows the cylindrical volume corresponding to the presbytery and the sacristy, with oblong rectangular windows and a secondary access. The innovative and symbolic architecture of the church of San Vito Nuova reflects a contemporary perspective in the integration of forms and meanings in sacred design.
