L'Annunziata, one of the oldest "farmhouses" of Cava de' Tirreni, stands on the south-eastern side of Mount Castello. Dominated by the parish church dedicated to the Virgin Annunziata, the village preserves the roots of its history. The church, built in 1506, replaced the older S. Maria a Toro as the parish seat, offering greater convenience to the inhabitants. A plaque in the church commemorates this transformation, confirming the importance of this place over the centuries and its central role in the Cavese community.
Description
The church of the Annunziata, built in 1506, plays a significant role in the history of Cava de' Tirreni. Originally designated as the new parish headquarters, it replaced S. Maria a Toro to improve the convenience of the inhabitants. During the 18th century, the church underwent extensive restoration, preserving some important works of art despite the thefts it suffered.
The façade, embellished with a carved stone portal, presents the effigy of Emperor Charles V and dignitaries of the time. Inside, the Annunciation by Marco Cardisco stands out on the main altar, while in the left transept there is a painting depicting the Immaculate Conception from the 16th century. An altar on the right houses a valuable terracotta statue of the Madonna delle Grazie, dating back to the 16th century, miraculously spared by a bullet during the war events of September '43.
The nearby convent, once inhabited by cloistered nuns, was also hit during the Second World War. The Annunziata locality, located on the south-eastern side of Mount Castello, is renowned for being a tourist and pilgrimage destination. Known as the "Little Lourdes", the location attracts visitors from all over Italy, interested in its evocative reproduction of the famous French cave and the sources present on the site.
L'Annunziata is one of the oldest "farmhouses" of Cava de' Tirreni, surrounded by the historic parish church dedicated to the Virgin Annunziata, which remains a place of worship and artistic interest.
