Church of Saints Nicholas of Bari and Giuseppe in Pregiato

  • Patrimonio architettonico
  • Chiesa di San Nicola da Bari, Via Nicola Salsano, San Nicola, Pregiato, Santa Rosa, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia

The monumental complex of San Nicola constitutes the architectural fulcrum of the Pregiato hamlet in Cava de' Tirreni. It includes the parish church of the same name, the bell tower, the sacristy and the oratory of San Bernardino. Located on the first hilly slopes of the eastern bank of the valley, this urban context reflects a mix of ancient settlements, modern expansion and still rural areas. The complex represents not only an important place of worship but also a characteristic element in the history and structure of the local community.

Description

The monumental complex of San Nicola a Pregiato is steeped in a rich history that has its roots in 1046, as reported in the "Codex Diplomaticus Cavensis". The abbot of S. Massimo in Salerno, Algerino (or Alferio), granted the church for the benefit of the deacon Pietro, adding a residence and surrounding properties. The current building, with its baroque façade, represents the evolution of this thousand-year-old tradition.

The structure follows a longitudinal plan with three naves, side chapels, a large tripartite transept and a mixed-line central apse, surmounted by a sumptuous dome. The baroque facade, with light plaster and dark gray tuff decorations, embodies an architectural and aesthetic balance. Inside, the main nave is divided into two orders with pillars, composite pilasters and rectangular windows. A decorated entablature separates the levels, while the wooden coffered ceiling in the central nave is embellished with paintings.

Elements of notable artistic and historical importance include the pre-conciliar high altar, the retable and other architectural and decorative details. San Nicola a Pregiato is a crossroads of styles and eras, representing a precious cultural heritage that spans centuries of local history.

In 2012, the bell tower was damaged by lightning, causing injuries and detachments of materials. The 2014 restoration works involved structural consolidation, the application of carbon fibers for the lesions, the integration of materials and plasters, the restoration of the stuccos, the external painting and the majolica covering of the dome, together with the introduction of an internal metal staircase.
