In 1600, the City of la Cava improved the road system with the construction of a new bridge to the north, completing the stretch of the Strada Regia. The area, crossed by the Secco river, also known as Resicco, which flows into the Contropone river, was subject to flooding after heavy rains. The new bridge replaced a precarious wooden bridge, making the passage safer. At the northern and southern entrances of the Borgo, two epigraphs accompanied two large fountains, testifying to the city's care for its infrastructure.

Description

In the heart of the City of la Cava, the imposing epigraphs on the sides of the north and south entrance were flanked by two large fountains. In 1600, the new section of the Strada Regia north of Cava was completed, accompanied by the construction of a bridge to improve traffic. The area was home to the Rio Secco, also known as Resicco, which joined the Rio del Contropone, a small river originating at the slopes of Monte Finestra, crossing Passiano and then flowing into the Cavaiola.

This new bridge, commissioned by Don Juan Alonso Pimentel de Herrera, count of Benevento and viceroy during the reign of Philip III, also included a fountain and a trough.

The structure, built with square blocks of gray stone, featured refined architectural details such as Doric capitals, triglyphs, a triangular tympanum, pinnacles with spheres, heraldic shields and large lateral volutes.

Although the fountain and trough have no longer been present since 1700, the central epitaph commemorated the work of Don Juan Alonso Pimentel de Herrera in 1609, underlining his commitment to public utility and the benefit of travelers. In the center of the epitaph, under the heraldic shields of Philip III and the Duke of Benevento we read:

UNDER THE REIGN OF PHILIP III, THE VERY ILLUSTRIOUS AND EXCELLENT JUAN ALONSO PIMENTEL DE HERRERA, COUNT OF BENEVENTE AND VICEROY, IN THE YEAR OF THE LORD 1609 BUILT THE BRIDGE CALLED DEL RESICCO FOR PUBLIC UTILITY AND BENEFIT OF TRAVELERS.
