San Lorenzo building complex “former asylum for beggars”
- Progetti PICS
- Via San Lorenzo, San Lorenzo, Maddalena, Cava de' Tirreni, Salerno, Campania, 84013, Italia
The ambitious project involves the restoration and transformation of an existing building into a multifunctional center dedicated to social promotion and prevention, with particular attention to early childhood. The intervention aims to preserve the historical and structural integrity of the building, adapting it to host socio-health and educational services. The internal spaces will be adapted to accommodate a wide range of activities beneficial to the local community, promoting wellbeing and providing essential complementary services for children.
Description
The project envisages different uses of the spaces within the historic building complex, dating back to 1600, with a rich past that includes the residence of the Orilia family, a religious complex, a reception centre, an orphanage, barracks, a branch of the military hospital, a school and accommodation for earthquake victims. The objective is to transform this historic building into a center of social-welfare and socio-educational services.
The project includes various functional areas, such as a refreshment and canteen area, a multipurpose room, a family center, a territorial educational area, a multifunctional social center for minors, additional nursery services, a mini health center and a community reception for pregnant women, mothers and children. The funding for the work amounts to 3,407,039.62 euros, coming from the Integrated Sustainable City Program (Pics), Axis 10 of the OP FESR Campania, action 9.3.2 and 9.3.8. This program includes 8 macro projects with 11 overall interventions, all in progress, and total funding of 11,197,384.56 euros from European Community funds.
The city councilor responsible for the program, Anna Padovano Sorrentino, underlines the social importance of the project, not only as the recovery of a historical heritage, but also as an initiative that will significantly contribute to the livability, inclusion and sustainability of the city. With the presentation of this work, the picture of all the eight major recovery, redevelopment and urban regeneration projects of the Pics, which are radically transforming the face of the city, is practically completed.
